The Hartford Whalers picked up a win at Hell's Gate, knocking off the Death Valley Buzzards, 3-1. Starting pitcher Mitch Craft played a key role in the triumph. Craft went 6.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. His record improves to 6-7. Hideyoshi Watanabe got the save, his 8th in 11 chances.

Carlos Morín, the 35-year old catcher , had a direct impact on the outcome. Morín contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth inning to put Hartford up, 1-0.

"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Morín said.

The win makes Hartford 47-59.
